Today, we are sharing more details on our plans to make online multiplayer in free-to-play games available on Xbox without an Xbox Live Gold membership. As part of listening to your feedback, this change will take place starting today, and all Xbox players will be able to access online multiplayer at no charge for a library of over 50 free-to-play games that support online multiplayer.
Until now, Xbox Live Gold has been required to play all Xbox games online, including free-to-play titles like Warzone, Fortnite and Rocket League, which are available at no extra cost on rival platforms.

As well as access to online play, Xbox Live Gold offers subscribers purchase discounts and monthly free games that can be kept permanently on Xbox 360 or while a subscription remains active on Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One.
The Xbox website has been updated with the list of games that are now free to play. It will also display whether the game is free to play online or requires a subscription in the Microsoft Store. There are some features that still require a subscription and these include premium or paid game modes and experiences. Demos of games that require a pre-order or purchase, early access edition, trial license versions also require an Xbox Live Gold subscription. There's an FAQ page for Xbox players to get more details about this new update.
"The decision to prioritize a single local screen was made to ensure a stable user experience across a variety of different PC settings and devices. Raid mode will support online co-op shortly after launch when a free patch is available for players to download which adds this feature, but the main campaign on PC will only be available to play in single local screen."
In a follow-up FAQ (opens in new tab), Microsoft confirms that "effective April 21, 2021, all Xbox players can access online multiplayer for free-to-play games on their console at no charge. For these games, an Xbox Live Gold membership is no longer needed. You'll be able to download and play online entirely for free on your Xbox console." The company also confirms that if you only use your subscription for free-to-play games, you'll be able to immediately cancel your membership, and receive a credit based on the time remaining on the subscription.
Xbox Live Gold has been a requirement for online play on Microsoft consoles since the days of the Xbox 360, but has come under increased scrutiny in recent years, as it's limited access to certain explosively-popular free games. The change means that Fortnite, for example, will be entirely free-to-play on an Xbox console for the first time since the launch of its battle royale mode. If a game contains both free and premium game modes, however, online play will still require a subscription.
I have been a PC gamer all my life, so I was surprised that console players had to pay a subscription to play online games. Xbox users have it easier than PlayStation owners as they can technically play over 80 free-to-play games online.
Xbox has not always allowed free-to-play games to be played online without a subscription. The company was even heavily criticized when it tried to increase the price of its Xbox Live Gold. Ultimately, Microsoft backtracked and offered to remove the paywall for free-to-play multiplayer games. 2ff7e9595c
